The Rise of the Pop Christians
Holly is an average teenager. She lives a normal teenage life too. She goes through what every other of her kind goes through: school, friends, problems, relationships, acceptance etc. Holly goes to church too. There, she finds joy! This is her true acceptance, where she will always ever find happiness in worshipping. Never will you find her at her seat, because she's at the front, jumping, dancing, worshipping at the top of her voice, just like all her other true members of the church, the volcanic energy shows. She KNOWS she's worshipping God because those who are not really worshipping are those at their seats, hands in pockets, maybe clapping along. Since she's doing like the youth pastor says, it must be true worship! Yes, yes it is! Oh she feels it all over her, that sensation! It makes her jump even higher.
At school, Holly is not like the other 'Sunday Christians' the sermons talk about all the time- you know, those who act holy and all in the presence of church but live a double lifestyle all other days. No, not like that at all, Holly is. She is only too proud to share and proclaim her status as a true Christian! Yes! For all the world to see! She does this by her keychains, stickers, products which say "I love Jesus" etc, and singing contemporary Christian songs, loud enough for her other friends to affirm her faith. She leaves her non-Christian friends intrigued, making her found faith seem so appealing that, pretty soon, Holly's friends behave in a similar manner, and go on to influence others.
Holly is only one of the astounding-disturbing numbers of the rise of the Pop Christians.
... because it is COOL to be one.
I coined the term Pop Christian to refer to
1) a group of individuals who possess the belief that since they are not non-Christians or lukewarm Christians therefore they are true Christians. Please refer to your local pastor for the definition of a true Christian.
2) a group of individuals who mimic the actions of the ideal Christian and thereby acquiring attributes/traits which are Godly, yet 'cool'. They therefore are assured by themselves and fellow Pop Christian comrades as holy. 'Cool yet holy' is the objective of one of the refered.
3) the same group of individuals, who despite mentioned actions, do not display true essence of Christian behaviour in non pre-meditated situations. Their pretentious actions which they hope to portray a holier than thou side of them are forcefully applied superficially.
4) the above mentioned point 3 is in accordance to their other belief that since appointed a 'youthful energy pumped warrior of God' therefore they must prove themselves worthy. Drastic and exaggerated actions carried out (esp through worship) are thus errored in motive.
5) possessing also the false belief that since acquiring position of a christian youth, time, which the idealistic youth is thought to most freely have, must be sacrificed in (intended meaningful turned useless) activities which do not aid the spiritual growth in any way of the pop christian, reason accounting their very nature, but more importantly, motive.
